Former Cavaliers coach Mike Brown has agreed in principle to become the next coach of the Lakers, reports Sports Illustrated.

The deal is reportedly for four years and $18 million, with a team option for the fourth year.

Brown, who spent five seasons in Cleveland before being fired after the 2009-2010 season, will replace hall-of-fame coach Phil Jackson, who retired after the Lakers were swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Mavericks.

According to SI’s Sam Amick, Lakers star Kobe Bryant was “surprised” when Brown’s name emerged in the search process Tuesday.

Brown, who went 272-138 in Cleveland, was also courted strongly by the Golden State Warriors. He is expected to officially sign his contract Wednesday or Thursday.
