Posey done for season

The Giants suffered a devastating blow Thursday with the news that offensive catalyst and reigning NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey would likely miss the rest of the reason with a fractured leg.

Posey, who batted cleanup and was instrumental in the San Francisco’s World Series run last year, suffered the injury Wednesday night in the 12th inning while trying to tag out Florida’s Scott Cousins at the plate. Cousins crashed into Posey before touching home to score the tying run, while Posey lay on the ground writhing in pain. According to MLB.com, Posey might have torn ligaments in his leg.

Now, the Giants must attempt to retain their 2 1/2 game division lead in the NL West with career .231 hitter Eli Whiteside replacing the team’s best player.

In other news, the Giants called up catcher Chris Stewart and first baseman Brandon Belt from Triple-A Fresno and placed infielder Mike Fontenot and outfielder Darren Ford on the 15-day DL.
